Steve McCloon Demonstrates String Inlay

String inlay are thin strips of wood embedded into grooves in a wooden substrate. The inlay is typically a color that contrasts with the color of the substrate. String inlay is a hallmark of federal period furniture. Although less common, it can be an excellent embellishment for modern furniture, and smaller projects like boxes. At the June meeting, Steve McLoon will demonstrate how to make string for inlay and how to do straight lines and curved inlays. He will demonstrate methods using hand tools and using a Dremel router.

Steve McLoon makes art, crafts and furniture in wood. His studio is in the Casket Arts building in the Arts District in NE Minneapolis. He also teaches woodworking classes in his studio. He has been woodworking since 2007. He divides his studio time between turning and flat work. He loves when his work shows off the natural characteristics of natural wood. His website is www.millennium-studio.com.
